A Federal Flood Damage Reduction Project
Other Flood Damage Reduction Plans for Greens Bayou
On June 24, 1986, Harris County Commissioners Court adopted the Greens Bayou Regional Flood Control Plan to reduce existing flood damages and to establish costs and guidelines for new developments to offset their impacts on existing flood levels.

Since 1986, the HCFCD has acquired seven regional detention basin sites in the Greens Bayou watershed totaling 2,600 acres. Three have been completed or are being excavated. All are scheduled to be complete or have an initial phase completed in the next five years. Some limited channel rectification has been done in conjunction with some of the detention basins.

The HCFCD has spent $31 million on these projects since 1986 and expects to spend another $31 million in the next five years. In addition, the HCFCD has an active voluntary buyout program in association with the Federal Emergency Management Agency for homes that qualify and have flooded frequently or severely.
